After several generations had passed a very virtuous and dharma-abiding Shakya prince named Shuddhodana came to the throne. He continued to confer patronage on the brahmins and conscientiously carried out his royal duties (dharma). He even inspired his enemies to turn to the righteous path (dharma). Seeing how given to dharma Shuddhodana's nature was, the dharma-loving dharma-beings of heaven caused his queen, Maya, to become pregnant with a bodhisattva, who proceeded from Tushita heaven to Maya's womb. Brahmins foretold the advent of a prince who would be a bearer of honour, majesty and dharma. At his birth, the earth shook and blossoms rained from sky. A younger queen gave birth to the bodhisattva-prince's half-brother, called Sundara-Nanda ("Handsome Nanda") due to his striking good looks. Whereas Nanda was an idle pleasure-seeker, the older prince, Siddhartha ("Object-Accomplisher") was more reflective in nature. He had seen an old man, a sick man, and a corpse, and been moved to a compassion which caused him not to be satisfied by sensuality. Like a goose leaving a lake of bruised lotuses, he left the palace at night, indifferent to the beautiful women sleeping in it.
